50-Year Members
Installation and Dinner Dance
Riverhead Fire Department held its 44th annual Installation and Dinner Dance on Saturday, May 12, at Majestic Gardens in Rocky Point.
Twenty-four 50-plus year members of the department were recognized, as follows:
Tony Bugdin (50), Joe Pipczynski (50), Lou Waski Jr. (50), John Reichel (50), Larry Taylor (51), Leon Jasinski (51), William Conklin (51), Chet Leja (52), William Hubbard (52), Bob Taylor (53) Vincent Golembeski (53), William Brooks Jr. (53), Stan Zambriski (55), Alan Benjamin (56), John Kobylenski (57) Marty Montag (57), Ed Kukla (59), Frank Corwin (59), Frank Sendlewski (60), the late Frank Maks (60), Elliot Barth (61), Benny Poudel (63), Harold Schaefer (65) and Al Bartunek (72).
These gentlemen, who have given their all to the fire department, should be commended for a job well done.
Ex-chief Ed Carey was recognized for his six years of dedicated service as assistant chief and two years as chief of the fire department, with many plaques from the fire department, Sen. LaValle's office, Town Supervisor Phil Cardinale, County Legislator Ed Romaine, and more.
The new chief of the fire department is Robert Zaweski; first assistant, George Woodson; second assistant, Nick Luparella II; and third assistant, Kevin Davis (who was recently elected for a second time to go through the ranks).
Firefighter of the Year for 2006 was second lieutenant Timothy Corwin of Eagle Hose Company No. 4.
Officers of the year, 2006, were David Sparrow, captain; first lieutenant Bruce Edwards; second lieutenant Brian Fleischman. Company of the year was Reliable Hose and Engine Company No. 1.
The top 10 responders were Frank Darrow, Robert Sczepanick, Kevin Brooks, Tim Corwin Jr., Kevin Davis, Norm Beale, Alan Benjamin, Steve Beal, Bruce Edwards and Vinnie Golembeski.
The banquet committee consisted of Commissioner Charles Bloss, ex-captain Constance Kwasna and ex-captain David Sparrow, who did a magnificent job with all the details to make the evening extra-special for the firefighters and their guests.
Thanks go to the members who stood by from the Jamesport and Flanders fire departments while the Riverhead banquet was in full swing.
