FDNY 9/11 Tribute
From the time the FDNY was organized in 1865 until September 10, 2001 a total of 774 members were lost in the line of duty. On September 11, 2001 an additional 343 FDNY members were added to this list.
In addition to the FDNY loss, the NYPD lost 23, the NYNJPA lost 75 and an unofficial count of 2,823 civilians also lost their lives in this viscous attack on America.
To put the magnitude of these numbers into perspective, America suffered the loss of 2,341 servicemen and 54 civilians in the attack on Pearl Harbor which marked the beginning of WW2.

September 11, 2001 - the end of the world as we knew it. Amidst the chaos and rubble where the World Trade Center no longer stood, Record photographer Thomas E. Franklin captured one of history's most unforgettable images of hope -- three FDNY firefighters raising the American flag.
Standing defiantly against the gray and white landscape of devastation, these dust-covered men and the vivid red, white and blue of Old Glory instantly became a symbol of American patriotism.
Franklin's photo of these three heroic rescuers also became a global message that life, and America would go on. "The Shot immediately felt important to me," Franklin said. "It said something to me about the strength of the American people and about the courage of all the firefighters who, in the face of this horrible disaster, had a job to do in battling the unimaginable."
