Alvin Charles Bartunek 1911-2008
Alvin Charles Bartunek, a resident of Polish Town since 1916 and a member of the Riverhead Volunteer Fire Department for almost 74 years, died Saturday at Peconic Bay Medical Center after a brief illness, family members said.
Mr. Bartunek, the father of former Riverhead Councilman George Bartunek, was 96, and the oldest member of the Reliable Hose and Engine Company No. 1, which he joined on July 16, 1934, at the age of 23.
He was born in Astoria, Queens, on Aug. 5, 1911, to Gottlieb and Anna Bartunek. His father, who was in the wholesale flower business, moved the family to the area of Marcy Avenue and Parkway Street in Polish Town, where Mr. Bartunek resided until his death.
In a 2005 profile in The News-Review, Mr. Bartunek recalled how his beloved neighborhood had changed through the decades. He remembered Marcy Avenue “as just a wagon track with horses’ hooves chopping up the road.” He often shared memories of hunting and fishing in then-rural Riverhead and eastern Long Island, family members said.
By the mid-1920s, he was working full time with his father at the greenhouses and farm, later named G. Bartunek & Son.
He was also the last surviving member of the fire department’s Iron Men Tournament Team, which won New York State championship titles in 1935 and 1936.
Mr. Bartunek enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1941 and went on active duty following the bombing of Pearl Harbor. He rose through the ranks and eventually was commissioned as an officer. As World War II drew to a close, he traveled throughout the U.S. in charge of troop trains.
In 1944, he met and married Blanche McFadden, a member of the Women’s Army Corps. In 1945, he was discharged as a fi rst lieutenant and returned to Polish Town.
“When I stood on the roof of my house, I could see 14 new homes being built,” he recalled in another News-Review story. “I’ve been to every state in the union, but if I could pick any place in the world to live, I would still choose Polish Town.”
He continued to operate the family business until he retired in 1994. His wife died 10 years later, at 91.
Mr. Bartunek is survived by his children, George, of Baiting Hollow, Diana, of Steamboat Springs, Colo., and Edwin, of Honolulu, Hawaii; and two grandchildren.
“He was always a positive person,” Diana Bartunek said of her dad. “He always found the good in every situation and every person, and he definitely left this world a better place.”
“He was a great role model,” George Bartunek said of his dad. “He was liked by everyone and he was probably one of the most optimistic people I’ve ever met, which is really a requirement of being a farmer.”

Charles J. Niewadomski 1927-2003
Charles J. Niewadomski, one of the original "Polish Town Terrors," died of cancer at his Riverhead home on March 19 at the age of 75.
Formed around 1935, the Polish Town Terrors were Riverhead's version of the Little Rascals. "Every Halloween we'd end up in the police station," recalled Mr. Niewadomski in a 1998 News-Review story on the Terrors, who had decided to come clean about their mischief about a half-century later. Some of their pranks were mild, such as asking for polka-dot paint at the hardware store, or peering sad-eyed into shop windows until a soft-hearted passerby would buy them a gift. Others were more spirited. "They stole the sacramental wine from St. Isidore's Church," reported Mr. Niewadomski's longtime companion Barbara Burke of Islip. "The priest chased them and they locked him in a barn after they jumped out a window onto a haystack."
Ms. Burke summed up: "They caused a lot of headaches, those boys, but they never did anything terrible. Just mischievous."
Most of the Terrors had nicknames. Mr. Niewadomski's was Kishka, or Keesh for short. "I won't tell you the story of how he got that," said Ms. Burke. "He'd come back and haunt me the rest of my life." Another famous Terror is Stanley Zambriski, known as "Tat." That story isn't printable either.
And they remained close in later life. "They all belonged to the fire department," said Ms. Burke. "And when that bunch of guys got together, forget about it. There was a lot of laughter. Most are gone now," she said. "Of the eight originals, I think only three survive. Now two.
"He's going to be missed," said Ms. Burke. "They were some darn good friends. They were very good to him till the end."
The son of Bruno and Rose Niewadomski, Mr. Niewadomski was born in Riverhead on May 27, 1927, and graduated from Riverhead High School in 1945. During World War II he served in the Army Air Corps' 379th Bombardment Squadron performing air/sea rescue in the South Pacific. Ms. Burke found some papers about one rescue effort after two B-57s collided. Five airmen were found and 16 were lost. "They finally had to give up the search," she said.
"He was very proud of his service," said Ms. Burke. "His car's license plate said B17G. That was his plane. And he had B17 models all over the house. He loved his B17s."
Back in the states, he worked for New York Telephone as a technician, retiring in 1990. A 43-year member of the Riverhead Fire Department, Mr. Niewadomski was an ex-captain of the department's Reliable Co.
He was a past commander of Van Rensselaer-Skidmore Post 2476 of the VFW in Riverhead, and an usher at St. John's Church in Riverhead,
In addition to Ms. Burke, he is survived by four sons, Joseph, of California, Dana, of Alabama, Charles Jr., of Kentucky, and John, of Riverhead; a daughter, Susan, of Kentucky; a sister, Lottie Adams of Riverhead; and 11 grandchildren.

He was a watchdog for the volunteer fire service concerning any changes in legislation and regulations. He always had a place in his heart for volunteer fire service. He gave us 110%."
